Vergara-Oronoz, Humberto

Hello Everybody! Welcome to Mr. Vergara's Cuckoo's Nest!

Great Expectations

My background:
My name is Humberto Vergara-Oronoz and I am originally from San Sebastian, Puerto Rico. I ended up in El Paso at around the age of 11 due to my family being stationed at Fort Bliss. I graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso with a bachelor's degree in print media and film studies in 2006. I earned my master's degree in the teaching of English in 2012.

My career:
I have been teaching for 10 years for the EPISD. I worked as an English teacher and AVID coordinator at Jefferson High School for 4 years. The next 6 years I have spent at Coronado High School and I have loved every minute of my experience at Coronado. My strengths lie in teaching freshmen level English and junior level English.

Why English?:
My passion for teaching English is an extension of my passion for storytelling through the art of film. I enjoy analyzing literary techniques not only in literature, but film as well.

What can you expect in my class?:
Higher order critical thinking through meaningful discussions about literature and current events. Students will learn how to be open-minded critical thinkers and strong analytical readers and writers with a global appreciation. They will discuss conflicts in literature and the world and attempt to find meaningful solutions to these conflicts. They will learn the value of argumentation and rhetorical analysis. Reading-to-learn and writing-to-learn activities are plentiful as they delve into what it means to be human. I have taught all grade levels in English and have experience in pre-AP, IB prep, and dual credit.
